Removing Minor Scratches in Finished Wood

If you have minor scratches in finished wood you may not need to refinish to remove the scratch.

If I have a cabinet door or entrance door that has a minor scratch, I will take a very worn out but clean, fine sanding sponge and lightly sand the scratched area going with the grain of the wood. The ideal sponge for this task is one that is so worn out it has no conventional sanding power left to it. I am talking about a sponge that is smooth to the touch. After a few passes with the sanding sponge I add a couple of drops of lemon oil and lightly sand the area.  This makes the scratch disappear.

The idea behind the sanding sponge is by sanding lightly you remove just enough of the clear finish to allow the lemon oil to penetrate through to the wood.

You can try this technique without the sanding sponge and see how it out works for you.   You may get a similar result.
